For those that are legally allowed to drink alcohol, coming home from a long day at work, putting your feet up, and sipping (or swigging – depending on the day you’ve had!) a glass of red wine is one of life’s luxuries. Not only does it seem to relieve all of the stress that’s been built up, but it also possesses a delicious taste that fires up your taste buds.

But, what happens when that glass of red wine actually becomes the main source of stress?

Let us explain…

So, one of the most common types of stain that we encounter is a big, purple patch on a gorgeous cream carpet. When we delve into the stain a little bit deeper, it quickly becomes apparent that the individual has spilt a large glass of their favourite Cabernet Sauvignon.

When this occurs, the majority of people erupt into panic, grab a soaking wet towel, and start aggressively scrubbing at the spillage. That may seem like the wisest thing to do at the time, but in actual fact, this will just engrain the liquid into the carpet and subsequently cause an actual stain.

Now, you’re probably thinking – ‘what should I do if I’m ever in that position then?’

Act Fast

With any type of spillage, not just red wine, you should react quickly. Yes, you’ve made a mistake and wasted your drink, while ruining your carpet in the process. But, by taking action before the spillage has chance to turn into an actual stain, you’ll be able to minimise the amount of damage it causes.

However, like we touched on above, it’s vital that you stay composed. Don’t act fast in a flustered manner. Instead, follow the tips that we’re going to provide you with, and you will notice a difference.

Apply Pressure

So, now you know that speed is the key factor, you’re going to need to know what to do with it…

Either get some kitchen roll, or get a white towel, and begin pressing on the spillage with all your weight behind it. Your aim is to try and soak up as much of the red wine as possible, so that less is left on the carpet. Keep blotting away, and once the kitchen roll or towel becomes soaking, get a new one.

At no point should you start scrubbing, just maintain the pressing or blotting motions. Once you notice no more red wine being soaked up, grab a new towel again, wet it slightly, and press on it again.

After doing that for a few minutes, and clearing up any excess, you’ll want to acquire a dry towel. Place the towel over the spillage, put something heavy on it, and leave it for a number of hours.

Seek a Professional

Check the stain, and if you can still see some colour on your carpet from the red wine, then it’s time to seek a professional.
